Import Process
What should you do before you place an order?
1. Find out information about legal requirements concerning the goods you want to import. That is:
i. if their importation is allowed without any restriction
ii. if their importation is restricted know how to obtain permission and cost involved
iii. if there is any restriction on their export and how to make sure the exporter comply with the requirements and obtain permission
iv. if their importation is prohibited.
2. Compile all the costs involved and find out if you can sell them at a profit.
Why necessary to know the costs involved?
Because customs duties on most of imported goods is levied as a percentage of value (cost). Correct Customs value is therefore necessary for assessment of correct amount of duties. Customs duties are levied when goods are exchanged and moved from one country to another and basically on imported goods but very rarely on goods for export where there is a need to
discourage their exportation.
What are the other rates of Customs duty?
Fixed (specific rate), which is levied based on quantity. However, there are cases where a combination of the two types of rates is used.
Why Customs duties?
Customs duties are used as instruments of fiscal and trade policies. That is, for the purpose of raising revenue, protecting the economy, promoting investment, encourage importation of certain goods and any other trade policy
